What better sofa for an Anglophile than Andrew Martin's William Union Jack Velvet! It goes against every grain in our modernist brains, but we are suckers for anything iconic-ly British. Blame it on The Who, or Paul Smith, but we can't get enough of the Union Jack. The upholstery job is clever, with tufted cushions and red piping, and it's the perfect conversation piece for the right setting.

Ruche is Inga Sempe's second design for Ligne Roset, combining traditional references in a contemporary vocabulary. Debuted in January, it is a study in contrasts - the clean lines of the settee are counterbalanced by the puffy quilted upholstery. Inspired by outdoor patio swings, the line also takes its name from the stitching technique of ruching - which has been very popular in fashion over the last few years. The frame is constructed from Beech wood, and creates a visually light platform for the upholstery. The one-arm settee can be used as a traditional sofa or as a day bed, allowing people to sit differently, whether upright or in recline. The settee is part of a larger collection that includes two-seater and three-seater versions - both with arms, a footstool, and an integrated table as an enhancement to the one-arm settee (shown above).
This coffee table is on our wish list: wood blocks coated with silver - how stunning! Designed in 2008 by One & Co for Council, this low occasional table named "Periodic" has an oxidized natural silver finish over reclaimed wood timbers which allows the natural grain to come through. We love the juxtaposition of rustic and luxury. With a footprint of 44" square by 12" high, this would be a conversation piece for any lounge setting. However, priced at $42,000 (retail at Matter), we don't think this is in anyone's budget. Council does sell to the trade and has more reasonably priced items, so don't despair.
